Germany 12 PhD Fellowships in Microbial Communication

The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. It conceptionally combines different research areas (microbial communities, interactions with plant, animal and human hosts and environmental interactions) to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de).

JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School prospectively comprising 150 PhD students who will be educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. Four faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutions as well as twelve partner companies are participating in this cutting edge research and training program which includes an innovative PhD program, career development and intensive sociocultural care. Three embedded existing Research Training Groups as well as twelve other cooperative research projects are engaged to incorporate novel research areas to achieve a complete view of microbial communication.

JSMC invites applications for 12 PhD Fellowships

We expect:

  • a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (e.g., Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Medical Sciences, etc.). Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply
  • high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
  • creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
  • an integrative and cooperative personality
  • very good communication skills in English (instruction language at JSMC)

What are the programme goals?

Under its "Energy- and climate-efficient structures in urban growth centres" Initiative, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will fund international collaborative projects in which German scientists and researchers will work together with partners in Vietnam, India, China, Iran, Peru, South Africa, Ethiopia and Morocco on drawing up and implementing solution-orientated, innovative strategies for selected cities.

The specialist programme on "Study and Research Scholarships of Today for the Megacities of Tomorrow" is also financed from the budget of the BMBF and offers highly-qualified students, doctoral candidates, postdocs and senior scientists from the above-mentioned countries the opportunity to study or do research in project-relevant subject areas. The studies and research should be carried out at German universities that are contributing to the collaborative projects. The collaborative projects, the project-relevant subject areas, the contributing German universities, and the respective contact partners can be found in the Annex. By integrating the scholarship holders into the work of the collaborative projects, the programme aims to create sustainable networking between the scholarship holders themselves and the German project partners.

Who can apply?

In principle, applications are open to highly-qualified students, graduates, doctoral candidates, postdocs, and senior scientists from the above-mentioned countries.

Selection process

The scholarship holders are chosen by a Selection Committee made up of German scientists and researchers from the respective collaborative projects. The key selection criteria are the quality of the study or research project, and the applicant's academic and personal qualifications.

Applications will be accepted up until 15 March 2009

UK Clinical Research (CSC) International PhD Programme 200

Advertising for eight UK/EU-eligible and up to three International Studentships for October 2009 has now begun.

    Closing date for application is 8th March. Short listed candidates will receive an invitation (16th March) to interviews which will be held for two days on the 30th and 31st March (students are required to attend on both days).

    On the interview days, applicants will have ample time to meet several Group Heads at the CSC, first during a poster session and second during one-to-one meetings. Each student will also have a panel interview to assess their general academic background, which will involve discussion of a research article (sent to invited students 1 week prior to interview).

    Offers will be sent to students on 6 Apr, and a response is expected by 9 Apr. Most PhDs will start in the following October, but exceptions may be possible.

    Applicants for MRC PhD Studentships should complete the application form (see below).

    The CSC is currently recruiting and there will be a number of additional Groups able to take students in October 2009.

      Requirements & Eligibility

        Candidates must hold or expect to gain a very good degree in a science subject (first or upper second class) from a UK university, or an equivalent qualification if obtained outside the UK. Candidates from prominent UK and international universities are particular encouraged to apply. Applicants with lower academic qualifications may be accepted in exceptionally circumstances provided they have a higher degree (e.g. an MSc) or significant relevant experience.

        Previous research experience in a laboratory is desirable, but not essential.

        In line with Imperial College policy, students whose native language is not English and who did not undertake their undergraduate course in English are expected to pass the language tests set by Imperial College as a demonstration of their proficiency in English.

        Requirements for UK/EU-eligible MRC studentship:

        • A UK National living full-time in the UK for the last 3 years, or

        • A UK National who has lived abroad for some or all of the 3 years immediately prior to this application for the purposes of their own or their spouse's employment or education or the employment of their parents, or

        • A non-UK EU National ordinarily resident in the UK for the 3 years immediately prior to the commencement of the course.

            Requirements for International MRC studentship:

            • Students from countries outside the UK are invited to apply for international studentships at the CSC. Candidates should hold a very good degree in a science subject.

              Funding

                Each year we offer at least 8 UK and up to 2 International MRC Studentships to students on our PhD programme. Students are funded during their PhD with a non-taxable stipend of £16,500, which is regularly increased.

                However the majority of students, who join the CSC every year, are supported by personal Fellowships or Grants awarded to research groups. The fellowships obtained by the students are from government research and exchange programmes, charities, companies or European programmes (see below).

                Netherlands PhD Position in Microbial Ecology

                Ph.D. position in microbial ecology:   Full Time

                Job Description :

                A major goal in general ecology is to understand the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. Ecological theory predicts that ecosystems with a higher diversity of species are more productive and more stable in the face of stresses and environmental fluctuations. Amongst the different components of biodiversity, the diversity of functional traits of species in a community is considered to be the best predictor of the related ecosystem process. In this context, we recently used experimental communities of bacterial species to evaluate the role of bacterial functional diversity on community processes. Diversity had indeed a positive effect on community function and we were able to demonstrate the relevance of the complementarity of species for resource use capacity in shaping biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships. The main goal of this PhD project is to use a similar model system to address the role of bacterial diversity in respect of the stability of the communities. You will be responsible for designing experiments with bacterial communities to test theories related to the diversity-stability relationship. You will apply classical microbiological methods to determine community functioning. You will develop and apply molecular methods for the quantification of bacterial species, as well as statistical models to untangle the effects of diversity components on community stability. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Microbial Ecology center (UMR5557, Université Lyon1) in Lyon, France.

                Microbial Ecology Research Group

                The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities.

                Job Requirements :

                You have a Masters degree or equivalent degree in microbiology/ microbial ecology, with a strong background in general ecology or in ecology with interest in working with microbial model systems. Experience with the application of molecular methods in the study of the complex communities is an advantage. The project is demanding and asks for dedication as well as a creative mind. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to attend a few courses and to assist in teaching students at different levels (10% of time).

                Conditions of employment

                The university offers a salary of € 1633, to 2443,-- gross (bruto) salary per month. Objective of the temporary 4 years position is to produce a number of research articles in highly ranked, peer-reviewed scientific journals, which will form the basis of the thesis leading to the granting of the Ph.D. degree (Dr.) at the University of Groningen. After the first year, there will be an evaluation as to the feasibility of successful completion of the Ph.D. thesis within the next 3 years.

                Description:

                An exciting PhD position in Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics is available at the Marine Molecular Biology and Genomics group at the Bodø University College (Norway), in collaboration with the Bioinformatics department at the Principe Felipe Centro de Investigación (Valencia, Spain).

                The overall aim of this project is to characterize the genetic networks involved in pathogen-associated molecular pattern recognition by Toll-like receptors, using the zebrafish model system. In addition to improving our understanding of the fish immune system, this fundamental knowledge will be most important for the development of therapeutic agents against bacterial and viral pathogens of economically important fishes.

                We seek a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with an MSc in functional genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, aquaculture or related disciplines. The ideal applicant will have a keen interest in microarray gene expression profiling and molecular biology, as well as strong programming skills.

                The salary will be circa 37 500 EUR per annum and the appointment will be for a total of 3 years, pending successful evaluation after a one year probation period.

                Scotland Master's Scholarship for Tanzanian @ University of Edinburgh

                The University of Edinburgh will offer a Scholarship to a student from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2009-2010 academic session.

                The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Economics and History. He was the first Tanzanian to study at a British University and only the second to gain a University degree outside Africa.

                The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarship will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK. In 2009-2010 the tuition fees and living costs will be covered by the University of Edinburgh, while the return flights will be covered by the Tanzania Edinburgh Community Association.

                The scholarship will be tenable for one academic year.

                Eligibility

                The scholarship will be awarded to a Tanzanian citizen who is normally resident in Tanzania, and who is accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.

                Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

                Criteria

                The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit with candidates requiring a Bachelor Degree equivalent to a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree.

                In addition to the above academic qualifications, the selection panel will also take into account the financial circumstances of applicants to ensure that as far as possible a student's financial situation does not impede a university education at the University of Edinburgh.

                The PhD programme funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) is administered by the Technical University Munich and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in close cooperation with Moscow State University.

                The main scientific goal is to combine computational and experimental approaches to achieve a qualitatively new level of understanding of cellular regulatory systems and their evolution with a special emphasis on signaling networks.

                Areas of investigation include comparative genomics of metabolic and regulatory systems, network-based interpretation of transcriptome and proteome data, and posttranscriptional regulation mechanisms.

                PhD students participate in a 3-year study programme and receive a monthly grant of €1,365 plus family and child care allowances, if applicable. Special TUM/LMU career development awards are available for outstanding female applicants.

                Post-doctoral fellows are expected to conduct independent research and function as group leaders, with focus on integrating results and exploiting synergistic interactions among projects. Post-doctoral fellowships are for 3 years (extension possible) and will be paid according to the German TV-L scale.

                We seek outstanding, highly motivated candidates of any nationality with a strong background in biology, computer science, or bioinformatics.
