International Scholarship Programme of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan

REGULATIONS

A. Presentation and aims

1) The Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (ENS de Cachan) has implemented a Scholarship Programme aimed at foreign students who are currently studying or have studied and obtained their latest diploma outside of France.

2) This programme is aimed at students wishing to apply for a second year Research Master (RM2) or for a PhD in order to follow or pursue their research training in one of the departments or laboratories of the ENS de Cachan. Priority is given to students who wish to undertake a complete second year of Research Master or a joint PhD (“cotutelle”).

3) The grant amounts to 1000 euros/month.

4) These grants are awarded for a minimum period of one semester (six months) and a maximum period of 12 months not renewable*.

Grants at the Master level:

· Grants are awarded for a period of 10 months to students applying for a whole academic year to carry out a Research Master (RM2). All ENS de Cachan master programmes are concerned, except the Design master programme and the Economics and Management master programme.

· Grants are awarded for a period of 6 months to students applying for one semester of study or research.

Grants at the PhD level:

· Grants are awarded for a period of 12 months to students applying for a whole academic year to carry out research in one of the ENS de Cachan laboratories. All ENS de Cachan research laboratories are concerned.

· Grants are awarded for a period of 6 months to students applying for one semester to carry out research in one of the ENS de Cachan laboratories. All ENS de Cachan research laboratories are concerned.

· In some case, especially for joint PhDs, 12 month grants may be awarded, upon decision of the jury, for two 6 month periods running through two consecutive academic years.

B. Conditions of participation

Required diplomas:
· For admission in a second year of Research Master (RM2), candidates must justify of a 1st year of Master degree (M1 equivalent to 60 European ECTS credits, at Master level) or an equivalent diploma recognised by ENS de Cachan.
· For research training, candidates must justify of minimum a 1st year of Master degree (M1 equivalent to 60 European ECTS credits, at Master level) or an equivalent diploma recognised by ENS de Cachan.
· For admission at PhD level, candidates must justify of a Master degree recognised by ENS de Cachan or be registered as a PhD student in a higher education institution.

Language skills:

· A good knowledge of the French language is required for students applying for a complete academic year in a Research Master level 2.

Age:
· For RM2 level admission, candidates must be less than 26 years old when starting their training at ENS de Cachan.
· For PhD level admission, candidates must be less than 28 years old when starting their training at ENS de Cachan or when they registered in PhD.

Country:
This Scholarship Programme is open to students of all nationalities. However, priority is given to candidates from European countries, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, the United States.

Are not eligible:
· Foreign candidates who are registered, in view of obtaining a diploma, in a French higher education institution.
· Candidates who have already been awarded another grant for the same period.
· Previous years’ grant holders*.

* In some case, especially for joint PhDs, 12 month grants may be awarded, upon decision of the jury, for two 6 months periods running through two consecutive academic years.

C. Registration, status and diploma
· Grant-holders admitted for a whole academic year as RM2 at the ENS de Cachan will be registered as ENS de Cachan regular students and may obtain credits and the Master diploma of the ENS de Cachan.
· Grant-holders admitted within the framework of a joint PhD: the joint PhD agreement governs the status of the student.
· Other grant-holders will be given the status of students of the international programme of ENS de Cachan, and according to their situation and the appreciation of the selection committee, will either be registered in a study programme and may obtain a Master diploma, or a research traineeship agreement will be signed between ENS de Cachan and their home institution prior to their registration at ENS de Cachan.
· All grant-holders will sign a grant-agreement with the ENS de Cachan.
All travel expenses will be borne by the grant-holder (registration fees, library fees, health insurance, accommodation, transport, etc.).

D. Selection criteria
- Quality of the candidate’s academic career (honours, ranking, duration of career)
- Quality of the scientific project
- French language skills (essential at the RM2 level) and/or English language skills

The selection procedure takes place in two stages. Candidates are invited to read carefully the following instructions.

European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Erasmus Mundus MSc programme

Why choose this programme?

If you are well motivated and interested in animal breeding,
statistical genetics and genomics, and you have completed a
BSc or equivalent degree in Animal Science or related fields
and have good knowledge in English, then the EM-ABG is
perfect for you.

The application deadline for joining the EM-ABG course is
January 15th for students applying for an Erasmus Mundus
scholarship. May 1st is the deadline for students who want to
participate in the course in the upcoming academic year
without scholarship.

What will you gain?

The EM-ABG is a two-year MSc programme which starts with
an orientation period for all students in Wageningen.
Subsequently, you will conduct the major part of the training
at two of the participating universities of your choice which
offers you the opportunity to have access to a broad range of
subjects. Successful students are awarded two nationally
recognized masters degrees (double degree). Graduates will
be able to contribute to the development of sustainable
animal breeding, in and outside Europe, in a national branch
in their country or an international breeding organization.

Which universities are involved?

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics is
accepted by the European Union as an Erasmus Mundus
MSc programme for a five-year period that started in 2007.
The universities participating in the EM-ABG are:

• Christian-Albrechts-Universität (Germany)

These groups have a long tradition of collaboration and a
strong profile in the area of Animal Breeding and Genetics,
as well as a wide international experience. Moreover,
representatives of seven international organisations have
joined the International Advisory Board which advices the
Consortium on the development of the course.

Fees and Funding?

For European students the tuition fee is € 2,000 per
academic year while for third-country students the tuition fee
is € 8,000 per academic year. EU-funded scholarships
(covering fees and living expenses) are available for non-EU
students and scholars (outstanding academic and/or
professional experience) participating in the EM-ABG.
For European students there may be a possibility to make
use of Erasmus-Socrates exchange and scholarships provided

The Program in Molecular Plant Biology (PMPB), a Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence (PRSE) at Colorado State University, is offering Graduate Research Assistantships to highly motivated Ph. D. applicants interested in Molecular Plant Biology.

The PMPB is an interdepartmental program with about 30 faculty members from four departments in two different colleges (College of Agricultural Science and College of Natural Sciences).

Researchers in the PMPB investigate fundamental and applied questions in plant biology using molecular approaches. Together, they have the expertise and a strong reputation in all areas of molecular plant biology. The participating faculty members are highly interactive and have research programs funded by various federal, state and international agencies. The questions asked cover the entire field of experimental plant biology including biochemistry, biofuels, biotechnology, breeding, cell signaling, cell biology, clean energy, developmental biology, evolution, genetics, host-microbe interactions, infectious diseases, pathology, photosynthesis, physiology, phytoremediation, rhizosphere biology, systematics, synthetic biology and stress physiology. In addition to fundamental research, several research groups are engaged in research that may lead to the development of plants with useful new traits in crop plants.

Genomic, proteomic and metabolomic approaches are integrated in these research programs.

Colorado State University is located at the foot of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, in the town of Fort Collins, which enjoys one of the best climates in the USA and is a perennial in the top 10 best places to live. Geographically and scientifically PMPB is in the perfect environment for exciting research in plant biology.

All students in the program are required to rotate through three laboratories prior to choosing a home lab. Project description: The major aim of the PhD project is to study the effect of environmental disturbances on the composition of bacterial communities. Particular focus will be placed on the investigation of community assembly patterns and mechanisms in temporal habitats where disturbances, such as draught and other environmental changes, occur frequently. In addition, the project will address the resistance and resilience of bacterial communities and how they are related to the strength and frequency of a disturbance. Approaches will include field studies and lab- as well as field experiments. The project also requires the application of a range of molecular techniques to characterize the bacterial community composition. The results of this project will improve our knowledge about the regulating factors of microbial diversity and the responses of microbial communities to environmental change and perturbations.

The position will be placed within the Limnology programme at the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Uppsala University http://www.ebc.uu.se/limno/.

Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that is interested in working at the interface between general and microbial ecology. Two Ph. D. Fellowships available at CCMB, Hyderabad

The Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) Hyderabad, India and Deakin University, Geeland (Australia), have started a collaborative program on mammary gland function and hematopoeitic stem cells.

Under this program, two fellowships for registering Ph.D. students at Deakin University, Australia are available through CCMB from February 15, 2009.

Each fellowship shall be for a period of 3 years initially and it will be extendable for the fourth year if required. Selected candidates shall receive a stipend of AUD 5000 per year which is equivalent to approximately Rs.1,60,000/-. CCMB shall provide the hostel facilities to the candidates if needed.

The selected candidates would also be required to go to Geelong (Australia) to carry out experiments related to the Projects, for a period of no more than two months every year for which, travel expenses and additional living expenses shall be provided.

Preference shall be given to candidates have cleared either the GATE, CSIR/UGC NET or the ICMR JRF exam. However, in case the candidate joins this fellowship he/she shall not be able to avail of the GATE, CSIR/UGC or ICMR fellowships.

Germany International PhD Program 2009, Tuebingen, Germany:

The International PhD program of the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Developmental Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory (FML) offers outstanding training in a broad spectrum of cutting-edge scientific research. The program provides students an interdisciplinary practical and theoretical training during their PhD research, particularly through common introductory courses, symposia and research seminars.

Duration

The typical duration of a PhD thesis at the MPI for Developmental Biology or the FML is 3 - 4 years. In most cases the PhD degree is conferred by the University of Tübingen.

Funding

The majority of students coming to the institutes are funded by Max Planck Scholarships, which are initially awarded for a period of two years, with a common extension to a third year. In the fourth year, students are funded by the individual labs through other sources. Furthermore, students are encouraged to compete for scholarships from other funding agencies.
There are no tuition fees associated with a PhD at the MPI for Developmental Biology or at the FML.

Language

The official language at the MPI / FML is English. All seminars, including lab meetings, are held in English. German language courses are offered for foreign students, and are partially funded by the institute.
The thesis can be submitted in either German or English language.

Application requirements

1. Highly qualified applicants from all countries are invited to apply
2. PhDs are normally awarded by the University of Tuebingen. The entry requirement for enrollment as a PhD student at the University of Tuebingen is a Diploma or Masters degree. Therefore all applicants must hold or anticipate to receive a Diploma or Masters degree by the time of their start as a PhD student in our institutes.
   Exceptional cases:
   A) An applicant demonstrates arrangements with a degree awarding institution that accepts a Bachelors degree for the enrollment as a PhD student.
   B) Candidates wishing to enter the program with a BSc degree have to obtain their Masters grade at the university of Tuebingen. This will demand at least a further year of studies.

3. Should the gap between your Diploma or Masters degree and your application be greater than 3 years please explain the circumstances in the application form.
4. Non European applicants require a GRE^® - Graduate Record Examinations - score. A copy of your scores will be sufficient, we do not demand an original designated score.

8. Research Interests
   When registering online, please select up to 3 PhD projects, which are offered by the work group leaders of our institutes as indicated on our web page Spring 2009 Participating Groups. You should choose those which seem to be most interesting for you. If you should be invited for an interview, you will be asked again, with whom you want to work with, therefore your preselection can be changed.
   
9. Interviews and PhD Start
   Completed applications will be reviewed by a committee of group leaders. Short-listed candidates will be invited for a three-day period of interviews and information exchange.
   The interviews will take place from March 11-13, 2009. Travel expenses are reimbursed, free accommodation is provided.
   Offers of admission will be made to the successful candidates shortly after the interview period. Successful candidates have to start their PhD studies within half a year from acceptance i.e. from March 2009 until September 2009 latest!

1 POST DOCTORAL POSITION IN BIOMOLECULAR NMR, Ref.nr. NT 83/08

Postdoctoral research associate position is available at the Department of Biotechnology.

The position foresees investigation of biomedically relevant proteins involved in redox regulation of cellar processes as well as other biomedically relevant proteins. The studies may include bioinformatics research aimed at discovery of novel redox-regulated proteins, biochemical analyses of these proteins, biomolecular NMR investigations (structural and dynamic) and elucidation of interactions of relevant proteins by NMR spectroscopy. The NMR center of the NTNU is equipped with Bruker 300 MHz, 400 MHz and 600 MHz spectrometers. The latter spectrometer is equipped with a cryoprobe. The Department of Biotechnology also has excellent instrumentation for bioinformatics, molecular biology and biochemical research.

Requirements
a) Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Structural Biology or related fields.
b) Advantage will be given to applicants with experience in high resolution heteronuclear NMR of proteins in solution supplemented by experience with programming, bioinformatics, molecular biology and protein chemistry. Experience in work with Bruker spectrometers as well as with CARA/CYANA software packages is preferred.
c) We seek a self motivated person, a hard worker with good organizational skills and a team player.

1 POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS (FUGE)

The positions will be available to outstanding candidates associated with successful research groups within functional genomics at NTNU.

Landmark technology has made it possible to study tens of thousands of genes and proteins simultaneously. Functional genomics makes use of this technology to study the function of specific genes, their protein products and how they affect each other. The aim of the postdoctoral project is to support a promising candidate
who has recently defended his/her PhD thesis. This type of funding is meant to develop the candidate’s competence in her/his prioritized area, and is to qualify the candidate for future advancement in academia.

Conditions for the postdoctoral position:

• The applicant must have established or agreed on collaboration with a relevant research group at NTNU. Hence, interested candidates are requested to contact research groups at NTNU for assistance in applying.
• In the evaluation process, the quality of the candidate as reflected by his/her PhD thesis and the quality of the proposed project will be given equal weights.
• Applicants who already have been employed as a postdoctoral fellow at NTNU will not be considered for the position.

The appointment of the postdoc fellow will be made according to national guidelines for appointment of postdoc fellows at universities and university colleges.

Post doc fellowships at NTNU are awarded for a period of 2 years and are placed in salary code 1352, level 57, on the Norwegian government pay scale, NOK 435.500 per year (before tax). The salary is subject to normal taxation by city and government authorities, as well as a statutory 2 % deduction for contribution to the Norwegian government pension scheme.

The Department of Biotechnology announces a vacant PhD research fellowship in the area of Microbial Biotechnology.

This research project will join the Department’s ongoing research on antibiotic-producing Streptomyces-bacteria, and will focus on metabolite analyses by mass spectrometry (Metabolomics).

The Department of Biotechnology cooperates with SINTEF Materials and Chemistry in several research projects pursuing a greater knowledge on bacterial antibiotic synthesis.

The Baden-Württemberg- SCHOLARSHIP

The Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg GmbH announces the Baden-Württemberg SCHOLARSHIP for students to assist the international exchange of qualified German and foreign students at the University of Hohenheim and the universities that co-operate with it abroad.

Studies must last at least 4 months and may not exceed 10 months. The size of the scholarship amounts to at least 400 EURO per month. Recipients of the scholarship are obliged to write a report about their experiences whilst studying to meet the requirements of the State Foundation and to attend events organised by it.

ICMR in collaboration with PGIMER, Chandigarh will hold a National level examination for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), for Indian national candidates at Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkatta Mumbai and Hyderabad on Sunday, July 13th, 2008.

120 fellowships awarded in Life Sciences stream (like microbiology, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, human biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, immunology, zoology, environmental sciences, botany, veterinary sciences etc).

Application form duly completed must reach the Registrar; Academic Section PGIMER, Chandigarh- 160012 by registered/Speed post on or before 25.4.2008.

Candidate from remote areas /regions may submit their application forms duly completed latest by 2.5.2008.

Eligibility:Educational: M.Sc/M.A or equivalent degree with minimum 55% marks for General/OBC Candidates and 50% for the SC/ST & physically handicapped (PH) candidates in the subjects mentioned above.Candidates appearing in the final year examination (2007-2008) can also apply.

Age Limit: The upper age limit for admission to the eligibility test is 28 years as on 30-09-2008 (relaxable up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PH/ female candidates and 3 years in the case of OBC.Information bulletin containing the application form and other details will be available at PGIMER

The candidates may apply in the downloaded form together with requisite fee by demand draft in the name of Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The prescribed application from along with Information brochure will also be available on cash payment (Not by Cheque or money order) from the office of Registrar, Academic Section,PGIMER,Chandigarh-160012 at the counter & ICMR, New Delhi from 24.03.2008 on payment of Rs. 500/- for General & OBC and Rs. 300/- for SC/ST/PH from 10.30AM to 12.30PM and from 2.30PM to 3.30 PM on all working days except Saturdays (On Saturday forms will be available at PGIMER, Chandigarh only from 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM) or by post for which request (inscribed on the envelope “Application form ICMR-JRF Exam -2008 must be accompanied with a Self addressed thick envelope of size 8” x10” bearing Postage stamp of Rs. 30/- and requisite Bank draft. The Bank draft should be preferably from any SBI Branch payable at SBI Medical Institute Branch (Code No. 1524), Chandigarh (for General & OBC Rs. 500/- and Rs. 300/- for SC/ST/PH) drawn in favour of “Director, PGI, Chandigarh”)Candidates are advised to preserve photocopy of the Bank draft for further reference. SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates should submit a copy of the certificate from the competent authority in English or Hindi along with bank draft. All disputes relating to the conduct of the examination or any matter connected with this advertisement shall be dealt in the jurisdiction of Delhi Court. Biotechnology fellowships for doctoral and postdoctoral studies

Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India has entered into an agreement with Third World Academy of Sciences ( TWAS) to provide 50 fellowships annually in biotechnology for doctorate and post-doctorate studies to students from developing countries. Fellowship recipients will study at Indian universities and research institutes. The programme will be administered in collaboration with the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).The application forms can be viewed and downloaded on the DBT and TWAS websites.

Last date for submission of Applications to the TWAS office is 31st August of each year.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY (DBT)

Applications are invited from Indian Nationals for the award of Biotechnology Overseas Associateship (2007-2008) for conducting research or training in overseas research laboratories in different areas of biotechnology such as (i) agriculture, food and feed biotechnology; (ii) animal biotechnology; (iii) aquaculture and marine biotechnology; (iv) food and nutrition; (v) environmental biotechnology (vi) industrial biotechnology : materials biotechnology, reaction and process design; (vii) medical biotechnology; (viii) nano-biotechnology and bioengineering ; (ix) bioinformatics and IT-enabled biotechnology; (x) intellectual property and patent law.

Who can apply?

Applicants possessing a Ph.D in the area related to biotechnology, life sciences or a MD degree with a good record of research contribution in the field of research are eligible to apply. They should hold regular/ permanent positions in Government recognized research and academic institutions / universities and should be actively engaged in biotechnology or related R&D work. Applications from persons working on temporary positions (eg., research fellows or associates etc.) will not be considered.

Details of the award :

Two categories of Associateships, namely, Long-term and Short-term Associateships are awarded.

Long-term associateship

· Duration : one year (not extendable).
· Entitlements : (a) Monthly Associateship amount @ US $ 2000/- or its equivalent in the country of study; (b) Preparatory allowance of Rs. 12000/- (one time grant); (c) Cost of air passage in economy class by Air India for joining the overseas laboratory and back.
· Age limit : not exceeding 40 years as on 31.3.2008.

Short-term associateship

· Duration : three months or six months (not extendable).
· Entitlements : (a) Monthly Associateship amount @ US $ 2400/- or its equivalent in the country of study; (b) Preparatory allowance of Rs. 10000/- (one time grant); (c) Cost of air passage in economy class by Air India for joining the overseas laboratory and back.
· Age limit : not exceeding 50 years as on 31.3.2008.

Other Benefits:
The Selected candidates may receive the payment of salary and continuance of other service benefits by the institutions to which they belong. However, no liability on any of this account will be borne by DBT.

Service Bond:
Selected candidates shall be required to execute a Service Bond to serve in India after their return for a period of three years depending upon the duration/category of the Associateship awarded.
